Daniel Martin Essig

Daniel Martin Essig, born on May 27, 1924, passed away on August 06, 2012.  Beloved husband of the late Eleanor. Loving father of Daniel Jr., Loretta Pichardo, Joyce Hanau, Janet LiDonni, Connie Kraker and Lisa D'Amore.  Cherished grandfather of twelve and great-grandfather of one.

Lifetime member of the Steamfitters Union Local 638.  Served in U.S. Navy during WWII. Dan was a plank owner of the U.S.S. Laffey, (DD 724), and survived the battle of Okinawa on April 16, 1945.  The USS Laffey was attacked by kamikaze planes and was hit by six planes and four bombs.  Although the USS Laffey took extensive damage, she survived, but thirty-two men lost their lives and seventy-two were injured. 

Daniel loved his family, friends and the USS Laffey.
